Note From the Directors
Welcome, and thank you for joining us on this remarkable journey with The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. This is a story I have wanted to bring to the stage for a very long time. Its themes of love, loss, growth, and rediscovery feel timeless and deeply human, no matter the audience’s age. Seeing it come to life with this ensemble of talented students has been a dream that’s been years in the making.
When approaching the design for this production, I found myself repeatedly returning to the origin of the tale: a beloved children’s book. That idea inspired the heart of our set concept. The entire world you see onstage is created from twelve 2x2 boxes—simple, sturdy, and endlessly transformable, much like the wooden toy blocks children use to build their own universes. With every shift, stack, and rotation, these blocks become the different chapters of Edward’s life, pieced together just as memories and moments build the story of who we become.
Color also plays a significant role in our storytelling. Each stop along Edward’s journey is marked by a distinct color palette—visual echoes of the people who shape him. Just as the characters Edward meets influence his understanding of the world, these colors remind us that every person we encounter leaves a tint, a shade, a hue in our own lives. Bit by bit, they help make our world more vibrant, layered, and full.
Thank you for being here to experience this journey with us. We hope Edward’s story touches your heart, sparks reflection, and reminds you of the beauty in the connections we make along the way. Enjoy the show!
